Community & Advocacy Resources

There are local and national organizations that provide resources for persons with behavioral health needs, family members, and caretakers of persons with behavioral health needs. Some of these are:

NAMI Arizona (National Alliance on Mental Illness)

NAMI Arizona has a HelpLine for information on mental illness, referrals to treatment and community services, and information on local consumer and family self-help groups throughout Arizona. NAMI Arizona provides emotional support, education, and advocacy to people of all ages who are affected by mental illness.

Mental Health Association of Arizona

The Mental Health Association (MHA) of Arizona promotes good mental health and works on behalf of all people living with mental illness by advocating, educating and shaping public policy. Programs include peer support groups, information and referral, community education and outreach, suicide prevention, and more. MHA of Arizona is the statewide affiliate of the National Mental Health Association.

Arizona Center for Disability Law - Mental Health

The Arizona Center for Disability Law is a federally designated Protection and Advocacy System for the State of Arizona. Protection and Advocacy Systems throughout the United States assure that the human and civil rights of persons with disabilities are protected, and can pursue legal and administrative remedies on behalf of persons with disabilities to ensure the enforcement of their constitutional and statutory rights.

Mentally Ill Kids in Distress (MIKID)

MIKID provides help and support to families in Arizona with behaviorally challenged children, youth and young adults. MIKID offers information on children's issues, Internet access to parents, referrals to resources, educational speakers, support groups, holiday and birthday support for children in out-of-home placement and parent-to-parent volunteer mentors.

ADHS/DBHS Behavioral Health Services

The Arizona Department of Health Services, Division of Behavioral Health Services is a state agency that oversees the use of federal and state funds to provide behavioral health services.

Office of Behavioral Health Licensure

The Division of Licensing Services, Office of Behavioral Health Licensure licenses and monitors behavioral health facilities statewide. They investigate complaints against behavioral health facilities and conduct inspections of facilities.

Adult Protective Services

People can report abuse, neglect and misuse of Arizona's vulnerable or incapacitated adults, 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling the State's hotline - 1-877-SOS-ADULT (1-877-767-2385).

Child Protective Services

The Child Protective Services program receives, screens and investigates allegations of child abuse and neglect, performs assessments of child safety, assesses the imminent risk of harm to the children and evaluates conditions that support or refute the alleged abuse or neglect and need for emergency intervention.

Office of Human Rights

The Office of Human Rights provides advocacy and special assistance to persons with a serious mental illness (SMI). Assistance includes providing special assistance with service planning, providing advocacy through the grievance and appeals process and assisting service recipients in the complaint resolution process.

Family Involvement Center

The Family Involvement Center (FIC) is a parent-run organization that can help when children and youth present behaviors at home, in school and in other environments that are puzzling or difficult to handle. FIC's mission is to assist and support families/caregivers and to help policymakers, agencies and providers transform systems to ensure children and youth with behavioral health needs succeed in school, live with their families, avoid delinquency and become stable, productive adults. To accomplish this, FIC:

  • Builds and unifies the family voice to improve children's services
  • Increases public awareness of needs
  • Provides training for family members for volunteer and employment opportunities to help other families
  • Develops partnerships for professionals and parents/youths to learn from each other
  • Facilitates parent-to-parent and youth-to-youth connections for emotional support and to learn together.

Peer-Operated Recovery Centers

Peer-Operated Recovery Centers, sponsored by Magellan, offer adults a chance to be in the company of others and develop friendships. Each center offers support groups and recovery workshops. Plus, you can talk with and get support from people who are experiencing the same types of challenges and who have successfully overcome their challenges.

Education is a big part of recovery and resiliency. The peer-operated centers offer classes to help participants move toward recovery goals including areas such as computer skills or other living skills. Call the centers directly to find out more information on the programs and activities offered.

Arizona Foundation for Behavioral Health

The Arizona Foundation for Behavioral Health (AFBH) was founded in 1997 to provide monetary aid to ground-breaking and continuing projects that lead to new services and improved delivery methods in the behavioral health field. Also, AFBH supports studies that promote long-term benefits to those suffering from behavioral illness.

Advocates for the Disabled, Inc., (AFD)

Advocates for the Disabled, Inc., (AFD) serves individuals in the Disability Claims Program who are under 65 years of age, have low income and/or homeless and have an active claim for disability benefits (including appeals on denials or termination of benefits). The primary causes of disability are mental disorders.  In addition, AFD provides a fiduciary management program for those disabled individuals of any age needing assistance managing their monthly benefits. AFD is committed to the belief that disabled individuals should have the necessary resources to enhance their well-being and self-sufficiency.
