Health, Wellness and Longevity Initiative

Framework WellnessBased on a report published by the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors, USA Today published in 2007 that adults with serious mental illness (SMI) treated in public systems die approximately 25 years earlier than Americans overall.  In Maricopa County, the largest and most populated county in Arizona, the rate of premature death for persons with SMI is 31.8 years earlier than that of the general population.  The SMI population also has a higher rate of diabetes, hypertension, obesity and dyslipidemia than the general population, and the incidence of cardiovascular disease in persons with SMI is two to three times that of the general population. Persons with SMI diagnoses also have poorer diets and are more sedentary than the general population.

To improve the length and quality of life of the people Magellan serves, this initiative will create programs and a mindset throughout the system to address mind and body health and wellness. This involves developing a model of care that combines physical and behavioral health and focuses on strengthening the whole health of the individual.

Community Reinvestment Initiative to Support Whole Health Programs for Adults and Children

In November 2011, Magellan Health Services of Arizona announced that it was accepting community reinvestment funding applications for innovative programs in Maricopa County that will integrate physical healthcare services with general mental health services, for adults, and behavioral health services for children, to provide a whole health approach to health care for those challenged with mental illness. While significant attention has been paid to the life-span disparity and poor health outcomes of adults with a Serious Mental Illness (SMI), integrated care is an important initiative across all behavioral health populations, and Magellan seeks to enhance coordination, improve outcomes and lower costs through these initiatives.

Maricopa Integrated Healthcare Home Project (IHH)

On Tuesday, August 2, Governor Jan Brewer announced a project to integrate mental and physical healthcare for the 14,000 Medicaid-eligible individuals in the central Arizona behavioral health system who are challenged with serious mental illness. This project is designed to enhance the quality and length of life for these individuals, who on average die 32 years younger than those in the general population.

The IHH Project is a partnership among Magellan Health Services of Arizona, Maricopa Integrated Health System (MIHS), and central Arizona's four adult SMI provider network organizations (PNOs): CHOICES Network, Partners in Recovery, People of Color Network and Southwest Network.
